The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed men’s hairdresser. This qualification is based on the barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading barbering association (British Barbering Association – BBA) and professional hairdressing body (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior men’s hairdresser.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing/barbering and/or a successful skills test and interview.

This qualification is based on the barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading barbering association (British Barbering Association – BBA) and professional hairdressing body (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior men’s hairdresser.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing/barbering and/or a successful skills test and interview.

Why is this qualification most suitable?

This is one of two VTCT qualifications in barbering at Level 2. This qualification allows learners to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients. Learners on completion of this qualification will become a qualified junior men’s hairdresser.

In contrast, the VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering requires learners to work in a commercial hairdressing salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times; learners on completion will become a qualified junior barber.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, and will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior men’s hairdresser.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior men’s hairdresser including: health and safety; client consultation; shampoo and conditioning hair; the research unit – working in the hair industry; basic cutting including facial hair and styling men’s hair . These units are all mandatory.

Learners will also develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: reception duties; providing scalp massage services; promoting products and services to clients; and perming and colouring hair – the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification). This qualification’s structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior men’s hairdresser

What could this qualification lead to?

Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council.

Career opportunities as a junior men’s hairdresser exist in a variety of contexts, including:

– Commercial barbershops/salons
– Specialist African type hair barbershops/salons
– Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
– Product manufacturing and training
– Television, film, theatre and media
– Armed services
– HM prison service
– Cruise liners

Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior men’s hairdresser, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking Technical Level qualification in barbering at level 3, these include:

– VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
– VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
– VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering Studies

Course structure:

We teach you a variety of haircuts using both scissors and clippers. You will be introduced to all tools of the trade, how to properly hold each and to use them. You will then learn to section the hair on the head, and you will practice techniques on a mannequin head. You will practice these techniques hands-on, and progress onto real clients.

With each service you have our tutor at your side giving direct feedback and support. We also use tutor demonstrations to give you the opportunity to watch the Barber and ask questions throughout the service. You next progress to focusing on refining and finishing techniques. Here we teach y drying, styling, and finishing techniques.  throughout your course you will be assessed on your haircuts to be completed to standards sufficient to earn your Level 2 qualification

By the end of the course you will be confident after completing a variety of haircuts

NGS of barbering VTCT Level 2 & 3 Certificates & Diploma in Barbering is an internationally recognised qualification which helps you find work not just in Ireland but also abroad. NGS of barbering courses cannot be failed, as long as you put in the time and effort in, you will achieve it.

We provide support to help you find a job. We are here to help you not only learn the skills but to succeed in employment. This involves helping you build a portfolio of your cuts. After the course, our students go on to getting jobs at barbershops and are doing well.
