The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is to prepare you to enter the specific sector of men’s hairdressing as a junior barber. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific role of a junior barber.
Overview
The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a vocational qualification that has been designed to develop a limited number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men’s hairdressing sector as a unisex hairdresser. This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 years and over. This qualification includes the units to prepare you to work effectively as a junior unisex hairdresser, including: client consultation for hair services, cutting men’s hair, cutting facial hair and following health and safety in the salon.
This qualification will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to advise and consult with men on the type of haircut and facial hair shaping the way they want, but just as importantly what is suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service protecting both yourself and your clients. Our school offers hands-on practical training. This means you won’t be spending all your time in books studying theory. Our tutors will be at your side at all times to supervise, build confidence, progress your skill level and deliver exceptional results. We teach students of all ages and genders.

- Fading techniques
With each service, you have our tutor at your side giving direct feedback and support. We also use tutor demonstrations to provide you with the opportunity to watch the Barber and ask questions throughout the service. Next, you progress to focusing on refining and finishing techniques. Here we teach you drying, styling, and finishing techniques. throughout your course you will be assessed on your haircuts to be completed to standards sufficient to earn your Level 2 qualification, By the end of the course you will be confident after completing a variety of haircuts, We are here to help you not only learn the skills but to succeed in employment. This involves helping you build a portfolio of your work. After the course, a high percentage of our students have successfully gained employment within the industry
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior barber. On completion of this qualification, you will widen your career opportunities through a variety of contexts, including:
- Working in a unisex hair salon
- Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a junior barber, you may choose to develop your skill base further by undertaking specialist qualifications at Level 3, including:
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering Studies
VTCT has other larger barbering qualifications at Level 2 where no previous experience of barbering is required, including:
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering (466 GLH)
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering Studies (345 GLH)
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering (333 GLH)
This qualification at 139 GLH is the only VTCT qualification focused on developing the skills of qualified hairdressers to enter the men’s hairdressing sector.
Who supports this qualification?
This qualification is based on Barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading hairdressing trade body The Hair Council as being fit for purpose to develop your hair skills to prepare you to work as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist.
